Liam McGill crowned 2025 Milltek Civic Cup champion

The Milltek Civic Cup – Rounds 16 & 17

Brands Hatch Indy Finale – 1st & 2nd November 2025

Liam McGill was crowned 2025 Milltek Civic Cup champion in a dramatic final round at Brands Hatch.

McGill edged closer to clinching the title with his seventh win of the season in Saturday afternoon’s first race, before being confirmed the champion in dramatic circumstances on Sunday. Lewis Kent ended the season in style with victory in the season finale, clinching third in the final standings behind Alistair Camp.

Also toasting success was Jack Ruddell, who clinched the Paul Winfield Trophy for less experienced drivers. Likewise, Mark Hughes retained the Goodyear Diamond Award for drivers aged 40 and over.

Liam McGill, Alistair Camp and Lewis Kent all came into the meeting with their eyes on the title, and they could hardly be separated in Saturday morning’s qualifying session. But all three were outpaced by their Area Motorsport teammates Jake Hewlett and Wesley Swain.

Hewlett appeared to have a consistent edge on pace in his EP3-shape Civic and secured a maiden Milltek Civic Cup pole position by 0.14 seconds. Earlier rain had left a damp track, although there was a largely dry line through the majority of the lap, rewarding precision. A late red flag further improved conditions for the final five minutes, in which the vast majority of drivers improved their times. Among them was teen starlet Swain, who impressed as he found more than three-tenths in the final moments to put his FN2 model on the front row of the grid, matching his best-ever result.

Swain was quicker than regular FN2 pacesetter Camp by just 0.065s, knocking the 2021 champion off the front row of the grid for the first time this season. But Camp still outpaced his two title rivals, although it could hardly have been closer. Just 0.032s split Camp in third from Kent in fifth, with McGill between the pair.

Ben Sharpe Racing’s Spencer Stevenson, having his second outing of the season, was best of the non-Area drivers in sixth overall, another quarter of a second back. The fourth row of the grid would be formed by Jamie Petters (Team Petters Racing) and Jack Ruddell (MJB Sports Cars), while Aidan Mitchell (BSR) and Daniel Petters (TPR) rounded out the top 10.

Sixteen-year-old Joshua Turnbull (BSR) managed a highly creditable 14th among the 26-strong field on his championship debut.

Camp made a lightning getaway to thread his car between the front-row men and into the lead at the start of Saturday’s race. But, on the inside line, polesitter Hewlett fought back as they approached the Druids hairpin.

Hewlett’s car nudged the rear of Camp’s, which pushed it wide through the corner and allowed both Hewlett and McGill ahead. Camp challenged McGill into the following Graham Hill Bend but McGill held onto second.

Next time around, Hewlett went wide into the fast, downhill right-hander at Paddock and McGill seized the opportunity to take the lead into the following corner at Druids. A lap later, Camp dived past Hewlett into Paddock, leaving the two most likely title winners first and second.

A fastest lap from Camp put the pressure on McGill but he was unable to get close enough to make a meaningful challenge, and still had Hewlett – who went on to set the fastest lap of the race – in his mirrors.

Behind the lead trio, Swain got slightly delayed in the second-corner skirmish, which let team-mate Lewis Kent snatch fourth, and the youngster was then eased aside by Stevenson at the end of the lap. Swain attempted to fight back into Surtees at on lap two, but contact sent Stevenson into a spin. It earned Swain three points on his licence and a grid penalty for Sunday’s race, and also delayed others – Jack Ruddell being the worst affected – as the field scattered in avoidance.

Kent made fourth his own, and Swain settled into fifth as Jamie Petters lost sixth to Aidan Mitchell. The man most on the move though was Dave Marshall (DMR with KA Car Sales). Having started a lowly 16th after a gravelly excursion in qualifying, Marshall was scything through the field and passed both Petters and Mitchell in short order to take sixth.

Further back, Graham Ross was enjoying one of his best showings yet in the Milltek Civic Cup, running well inside the points, before his race ended in an unfortunate incident. Jake Renshaw, who lost his best lap in qualifying for causing the red flag with an off at Clearways, was mounting a strong recovery and dived past Ross at Paddock Hill Bend. An optimistic Will Butt tried to follow through, but light contact with Ross’s FN2 – when both cars were unloaded as they dropped downhill – put them both into tankslappers. Ross ran into the gravel where the car’s wheels dug in and tipped him into a slow-speed roll.

The race was stopped with McGill victorious from Camp, extending the Scotsman’s championship lead to 17 points with one race remaining. Hewlett was third ahead of Kent – whose outside title chances were now over – and Swain.

Marshall’s fine drive was rewarded with sixth, while Mitchell’s seventh place finish was his best result yet in the Milltek Civic Cup and topped the Paul Winfeld Trophy runners. Daniel Petters passed brother Jamie to take eighth on the last racing lap. Stevenson did well to recover from his earlier spin; he passed Josh Bromley – who was suffering differential issues – for 10th just before the safety car came out, only to have the positions reversed on countback due to the red flag.

With grass in his radiators from avoiding Stevenson’s spin, Ruddell could only manage 19th overall but it was enough to clinch the Paul Winfield Trophy crown for the MJB Sports Cars driver. It was the culmination of a fine season in which Ruddell earned his maiden overall victory.

Similarly, while Adam Jackson took Goodyear Diamond Award honours on the day, Mark Hughes (DMR with KA Car Sales) did enough to successfully retain the season-long title.

Round 17 – Race Report

Bromley’s crucial 10th place put him on pole position for Sunday’s reversed-grid race. Jamie Petters should have started alongside but sadly didn’t make the grid due to electrical issues. Title rivals Camp and McGill were due to start from the fifth row, but Swain’s penalty promoted each a place to eighth and ninth respectively. With Petters missing, that effectively became seventh and eighth.

Camp knew that, realistically, only a win would do – and even then he would require McGill to finish no better than sixth. Camp went on the attack, with McGill keeping a watching brief, but Hewlett proved to be a stubborn opponent. Camp first went around the outside at Graham Hill Bend but a slight brush with Daniel Petters at Surtees brought Hewlett back into play.

Hewlett, Camp and Petters went three-wide through the fearsome Paddock Hill Bend and made it safely through, with McGill taking the opportunity to join in and nip past Petters.

The trio of Area cars then closed up to Dave Marshall, who was running third after losing out to Lewis Kent, with polesitter Bromley continuing to lead the way.

While Kent dived past Bromley to take the lead, Hewlett went side by side with Marshall before making third position his own. Bromley was Hewlett’s next target and, as he challenged, the cars behind closed up. Amid the frantic action, Camp passed Marshall and then latched back onto Hewlett.

The drama came to a head on lap six of 17. Camp nosed inside Hewlett at Paddock and Druids but couldn’t complete the move. That left him the outside line through Graham Hill Bend and Surtees. Entering the first part of the left-right flick, contact was made.

Camp’s car slewed sideways and onto the grass before running into Hewlett as he rejoined, with McGill also getting collected on their outside. Hewlett retired but Camp and McGill both continued, albeit well down the order and carrying damage. Camp pitted to have a broken wheel replaced while McGill limped on with a broken splitter and damaged steering rack.

At the head of the field, Kent would have been oblivious to the drama behind as he marched serenely on to a fifth win of the season. Marshall avoided the chaos to take second, his best result since winning at Silverstone in May, and Stevenson did likewise to come third despite a couple of brushes with Bromley. It was the BSR man’s second career Milltek Civic Cup podium, highlighting a successful end-of-season return to the category.

Daniel Petters beat Bromley to fourth (and earned family bragging rights by confirming himself above brother Jamie in the final points standings). Sixth meant that Mitchell – who bogged down from his second row starting slot – achieved a best-yet result for the second consecutive race, edging team-mate Renshaw by less than 0.3s.

Also recording best-ever results were Harry England in eighth, Will Butt in ninth and Joshua Turnbull in 10th on his debut weekend in the championship.

McGill and Camp limped home 17th and 18th. It was not the way either would have wanted the season to end, and both would have been worthy champions. Each had finished on the podium in 13 of the previous 16 races, but with seven wins to Camp’s three, it was McGill who was crowned 2025 Milltek Civic Cup champion.

Driver Quotes

Round 16 winner and 2025 Milltek Civic Cup champion, Liam McGill

“I’m delighted. It’s just a shame that it never ended with a proper battle at the front and it had to end in that kind of way.

“None of us wanted to end the season in that way so it was a shame because we both wanted to battle right until the flag.

“It’s been respectful all year between me and Ali, he’s a great driver. I’m glad to actually get the upper hand on him but I know that if he comes back next year I’m sure he’ll be very strong.”

Round 17 winner, Lewis Kent

“I know that I’m really strong on the brakes into Turn 1, so I was like, lap three, perfect. I dived in, got on the brakes, just stopped it on the apex and held it here [to take the lead]. From that point on, I just drove away.”
