The 2024 Milltek Sport Civic Cup reaches its climax this weekend (12-13 October) as Max Edmundson and Josh Files go head-to-head for the crown on the Silverstone International circuit.
The championship for pocket-rocket 230+bhp EP3 and FN2 model Honda Civics visits the British Grand Prix venue’s 1.85-mile layout for the first time in many years which means there is no circuit-specific form guide to draw on.
But reigning champion Edmundson and experienced international racer Files will expect to be the pacesetters again, having won 11 of 15 races so far this year between them.
The Area Motorsport duo are separated by 47 points heading into the weekend, with 88 on the table. That must make Edmundson a strong favourite to retain his crown but it only takes one non-finish to turn the situation on its head – and Files will be in prime position to snatch any opportunity that comes his way.
The leading pair will also be kept on their toes by the usual packed field of high-quality racers in one of the country’s most competitive championships.
Among them are Area’s four other drivers, headed by Alistair Camp, the squad’s sole driver of an FN2, while the other stick to the older EP3. One-time champion Camp is doubling up with TCR UK duties this weekend, but Lewis Kent, Harvey Caton and Liam McGill will have no such distraction as they keep up the pressure Camp’s third place in the standings.
Like Camp, two more drivers in FN2s are DMR with KA Car Sales pairing Dave Marshall and Mark Hughes. Marshall has been in fine form at recent rounds and arguably deserved better than his results showed at Thruxton last month after two incredibly entertaining drives. He has climbed to seventh in the standings, the highest-placed driver from outside the Area Camp.
Hughes meanwhile has provisionally already sealed the Goodyear Diamond Award. Simon Welch (Team Squelch), Anthony Gannon (Detail Car Care Racing) and Garry Townsend (Townsend Motorsport) provide competition in the category for drivers aged 40 and over.
The Pro Alloys squad will be looking to give the regular podium finishers a run for their money.
One-time Classic VW Cup champion Alex Kite leads the way alongside young gun Wesley Swain, who has blossomed into a regular top-10 finisher and had his best weekend yet last time out. Fellow teenagers Aydan Hassan and Harry England complete the squad’s entry.
Further competition comes from Ben Sharpe Racing’s Spencer Stevenson who goes solo for the local squad this weekend. A podium finisher on his championship debut, Stevenson would love to end the year with a maiden victory, on top of sealing the Paul Winfield Trophy for rookies and those with less frontrunning experience.
Brothers Daniel and Jamie Petters (Team Petters Racing) will be targeting more top-10 finishes and the chance to go for further glory in the weekend’s reversed-grid race. Dan enjoyed his best weekend of a part-time campaign on Silverstone’s National layout in August and will hope that sets him in good stead for the adjacent International circuit.
Among the single-car entries, MJB Motorsport’s Jack Ruddell is often the man to beat. Not having to jump between his regular EP3 and a classic Ford Mustang should give him an easier schedule this weekend as he looks to translate his pace into top-six finishes.
Jordan Brennan (One Day Motorsport) has been right on the fringes of the top 10 without managing to finish there so far this season, so will be aiming to put that right. Scott Smith (DH Racing) will have a similar target.
The field is completed by three privateers in the form of the ever-enthusiastic Will Butt, Jackson White who has his third outing of the season, and a seasonal debut for long-time Civic Cup regular Sam Nicolaou.
The double-header season finale begins on track with qualifying at 1135hrs on Saturday morning. Racing commences with Round 16 of the championship at 1525hrs. Then the final, reversed-grid, race of 2024 – Round 17 of the championship – has a scheduled start time of 1210hrs on Sunday.
Racing action will be livestreamed on the official TCR UK YouTube channel.
