Easter triple header for the Milltek Civic Cup as Brands Hatch beckons

The Milltek Civic Cup hits Brands Hatch this weekend (19-20 April) for an Easter special of action on the venue’s Indy circuit. Racing alongside the British Truck Racing Championship, a big crowd is set to enjoy three races from a packed grid of 230-plus bhp Honda Civic pocket rockets.

Leading the way as the teams head to Kent are Area Motorsport pair Lewis Kent and Alistair Camp. The duo are separated by just a single point after splitting the wins at the season opener at Donington Park last month. Local driver Kent, from just the other side of the Thames, drives the more common EP3 model Civic, while Camp is at the wheel of the newer FN2 version.

They are being chased by their team-mates Harvey Caton and Liam McGill, both previous winners who scored a podium apiece last time out. Area’s six-car crack squad is completed by two newcomers to the team who both impressed on their first outings. One-time Type R Trophy Jake Hewlett took a best finish of fourth on his championship debut. Meanwhile, young gun Wesley Swain rebounded from a difficult qualifying session to score big points in his FN2 on his first appearance with the team.

The rest of the pack will be targeting the 1.2-mile blast around the Kent countryside to break Area Motorsport’s dominant start to the campaign. Leading the chase heading into the weekend is Jack Ruddell. Run by multiple Civic Cup race winner Morgan Bailey’s MJB Motorsport outfit, Ruddell finally translated his undoubted pace into results last time out, with podiums his next aim.

Ruddell also leads the way in the Paul Winfield Trophy standings for drivers with less experience. His closest rival at present is Jamie Petters, who along with elder brother Daniel in their family-run team, looks to be on the cusp of becoming a challenger for top-six finishes overall.

Three drivers from one-car squads will be looking to build on eye-catching debuts. Matt Wilkins (Motion Motorsport), Charlie Constable (Orex Competition) and Adam Parker (privateer) all had impressive peaks at Donington. They will now be looking for more consistency to establish themselves as regulars in the top 10 (or higher) and potentially take advantage of the reversed grid for the weekend’s second race.

The healthy intake of rising young talent in the Civic Cup this year also includes two teenagers at Ben Sharpe Racing. Aidan Mitchell managed to qualify in the top 10 for his first race in cars while Jake Renshaw, a Junior Saloons graduate, wasn’t far behind. The pair are on steep learning curves, but they are making rapid progress with Civic Cup race winners Sharpe and Will Redford in their corner. Experienced racer Garry Townsend completes the squad’s three-car line-up, with his eyes also on the Goodyear Diamond Award for drivers aged 40 and over.

That is currently led by last year’s champion Mark Hughes (DMR with KA Car Sales), whose consistent drives give him a single-point advantage over series newcomer Adam Jackson (AMW Motorsport), both piloting FN2s. Previous winner Simon Welch (Team Squelch) lies third with his EP3. Joining the fray in the class this weekend, after missing the opening rounds, is another championship stalwart in the form of Anthony Gannon (Buttsy Racing with DCCR).

Hughes’s younger DMR team-mates, Dave Marshall and Harry England, endured tough first rounds, although decent damage limitation from Marshall earned a pair of top-10 finishes. The tighter confines of Brands Hatch could have an impact on the relative competitiveness of their FN2s.

Others looking to bounce back from disappointing results include Josh Bromley, who qualified his self-run car in the top half of the field at Donington but didn’t record a race finish. Charlotte Birch (Vinna Sport) slipped back from her mid-grid start slot as team-mate Francisco Howitt fared better in the races. Will Butt (Buttsy Racing with DCCR) and newcomer Ben Bateman (MWB Motorsport) will also be looking to make progress up the grid.

This weekend represents the first triple-header of the season so there will be lots to race for over a busy couple of days. The on-track action kicks off at 1050hrs on Saturday morning where grid positions will be decided in the qualifying session’s race against the clock.

Then on Saturday afternoon (1455hrs), Round 3 of the championship will take place.

There are two races on Easter Sunday, beginning with the always-spectacular reversed-grid encounter, Round 4 of the championship, at 1205hrs. The weekend finale, Round 5 of the championship, is timetabled to start at 1515hrs on Sunday.

For those unable to make it to the natural amphitheatre of the world-famous Kent venue, all the action will be streamed live on the British Automobile Racing Club YouTube channel, with the links included below.
