There’s no let-up in the busy Civic Cup schedule as, just three weeks after a double-header at Pembrey, the contest resumes with Rounds 9 and 10 of the championship at Snetterton this weekend (11-12 July).
In an incredibly close championship fight, the top six are currently covered by a mere 15 points – equivalent to an eighth-place finish. Will anyone manage to steal a march around the three-mile former airfield venue in Norfolk?
Eight races so far this season have been won by eight different drivers in the country’s most competitive one-make series, populated by grids full of 230+bhp Honda Civics. And incredibly, there isn’t a single previous Snetterton winner on the grid this weekend, making predictions even harder than usual.
Leading the way at the top of the standings is privateer Jake Hewlett. The Brands Hatch winner is just four points clear of Ben Sharpe Racing’s Spencer Stevenson who is still seeking his maiden win in the championship. Stevenson will have to contend with an extra 30kg on board his car at the start of the weekend after his Pembrey podium.
Matt Wilkins (Motion Motorsport) endured a tough time last time out in Wales, but the former points leader remains firmly in the hunt, just five points down on Hewlett.
The two leading drivers of the FN2 model Civic – as opposed to the more common EP3 – won both races last time out. Alistair Camp (Area Motorsport) knew he needed a success to reignite his challenge after a run of disappointing results, and the 2021 champion duly recorded a record-extending 19th Civic Cup win. It lifted him to fourth in the points, seven off the summit, but also comes with 40kg of success ballast to start the weekend at Snetterton.
The other winner was Dave Marshall (DMR with KA Car Spares), fifth in the championship, who put a run of misfortune behind him to prove the pace of his new-build car.
Completing the overall top six is Wilf Butler (Ben Sharpe Racing) who has been the revelation of the season, twice scoring maximum points in qualifying as well as winning on his debut weekend at Brands Hatch. As a result, the rookie also leads the way in the Paul Winfield Trophy, for less experienced drivers. Irishman Sean McGovern (Area Motorsport) and Butler’s BSR team-mates Aidan Mitchell – who arrives at Snetterton on the back of a maiden overall podium and therefore carries an extra 20kg – Charlie Constable are his closest PWT challengers.
McGovern is joined by his brother Harry, who is running a part-time campaign, this weekend. The crack Area Motorsport squad also features young guns Wesley Swain (ninth in the overall points) and Francisco Howitt, plus Charlie Budd, who returns after skipping Pembrey. Local hero Josh Files, the 2024 championship runner-up, also makes another guest appearance and will be looking for a repeat of his Thruxton win.
Also looking forward to an outing on their home circuit will be Team Petters Racing East Anglian duo Daniel and Jamie Petters, who have become regular frontrunners this year.
Josh Bromley (Bromley Motorsport) scored his first podium in a conventional-grid race last time out so will be one to watch at the venue where he heartbreakingly missed out on the MG Trophy title a few years ago. Bromley was pipped that day by Joe Dalgarno (Motion Motorsport) who is still finding his feet in the Civic Cup.
Making a belated debut this weekend, after transport issues intervened earlier in the season, is another former MG man, Paul Luti. Regular Historics racer Jack Ruddell (MJB Motorsport) is also back in action after skipping Pembrey, while teen star Louis Austin (Austin Autosport) will be looking to bounce back after a slightly frustrating weekend.
Mark Hughes (DMR with KA Car Sales) will be aiming to extend his advantage in the Goodyear Diamond Award, for drivers aged 40 and over, while the likes of Ben Bateman (MWB Motorsport) and Adam Paker (ADS1928 Racing) will be focused on the Paul Winfield Trophy.
On-track action begins with a Qualifying session on Saturday (11 July) morning, at 10:30 hrs. Round 9 of the championship then takes place that same afternoon, with a scheduled start time of 15:40 hrs. Round 10, the action-packed reversed-grid race, takes place on Sunday (12 July) – timetabled for 12:25hrs.
A fantastic weekend’s racing at Snetterton also features the TCR UK Touring Car Championship and fledgling sister series Audi Cup, as well as the British Truck Racing Championship, so why not soak up the drama from the busy spectator banks?
