Civic Cup Ready to Roar Back into Action at Oulton Park

Civic Cup returns from its summer break this weekend (Saturday, 3 October) as the championship chase enters its final stages at Oulton Park. A busy field of Honda Civic Type Rs will be out to entertain in what many consider to be Britain’s most competitive one-make tin-tops category.

Only four races are left to decide the destiny of this year’s championship. And it remains wide open heading into the Oulton Park double-header, with the top five drivers covered by only 31 points. To put that into context, there are still 216 points up for grabs across the final two weekends of the season.

With wins at each of the past three race weekends, Dave Marshall is the championship’s in-form driver. Running his own FN2 – the newer of the two models allowed by the regulations – under the DMR with KA Car Sales banner, Marshall has eked out a 24-point lead at the top of the championship. But the north-easterner knows he can’t rest on his laurels, especially without the luxury of any dropped scores to fall back on.

Leading the chase is Civic Cup’s most successful driver, the irrepressible Alistair Camp. Also piloting one of the less common FN2 models, Area Motorsport man Camp has had an up-and-down season. But the 2021 champion, the only driver on the grid with previous Civic Cup wins at Oulton Park to his name, is as tenacious as anybody. The Derby racer also has the luxury of a couple of top-10 finishes, which he is currently using as dropped scores, to call upon on if he hits trouble this weekend. Camp will look to make the most of a lack of success ballast – an advantage he holds over each of the other drivers in the top four – in qualifying and the opening race.

Just six points further back, tied for third in the standings, are Camp’s Area Motorsport team-mate Sean McGovern and Motion Motorsport driver Matt Wilkins. Both drivers compete in the more common EP3 model Civic. McGovern has undoubtedly been one of the revelations of the season, his first in Civic Cup. The Irishman arrives at Oulton Park on a high having achieved his first pole position and recorded a maiden overall victory last time out at Donington Park in August.

Wilkins too has impressed many onlookers. After leading the way earlier in the season, he endured a couple of rounds of adversity before bouncing back in style with a win at Donington. After adding a podium the following day, he is another brimming with confidence ahead of the weekend.

Completing the top five in the standings, only a single point further back, is teen sensation Wilf Butler of Ben Sharpe Racing. Butler scored a win on his debut weekend in the championship and has remained at the sharp end ever since, adding podiums in each of the past two race weekends. He also holds a four-point lead over McGovern at the top of the Paul Winfield Trophy standings, for rookies and less experienced drivers.

Sixth in the points is Bromley Motorsport man Josh Bromley. The East Midlander must be considered a long-shot for the title, lying 69 points off the pace, but that won’t stop him giving his all every inch of the way. Bromley has three podiums to his name this season, including a second place last time out on home ground. But a maiden victory is proving to be elusive – something he will be keen to put right this weekend.

Among those not in contention for the crown, there are plenty more capable of challenging for race wins and podiums. Dan Petters (Team Petters Racing) was a winner at Snetterton before coming back down to earth with a bump in the following round at Donington. He was a podium finisher at Oulton Park last year, while younger brother Jamie is well overdue a first top-three finish.

Alongside Butler at BSR, Aidan Mitchell will be looking to add to his podium count, while fellow young guns Jake Renshaw, Charlie Constable and Freddie Ingram could also be contenders – especially if they can benefit from the second race’s reversed grid.

Austin Autosport’s Louis Austin – a podium finisher on his second weekend in Civic Cup – will be looking to continue his improved form from Donington in August after a tougher spell over the preceding rounds. Charlie Budd (Area Motorsport) had his best weekend yet last time out as he looks to end the season on a high.

Joe Dalgarno (Motion Motorsport) impressed by qualifying eighth at Donington, only for his weekend to go rapidly downhill thereafter. Adam Parker (ADS1928 Racing) is another driver hoping for a change of fortune after a catalogue of mechanical failures.

Harry England, whose family outfit teams up with DMR to run his FN2, and Ben Bateman (MWB Motorsport) will be aiming for solid points finishes. Look out too for the returning Callum Eynstone (AT Motorsport), whose FN2 has missed the past two race weekends.

Further interest comes from the Goodyear Diamond Award, for drivers aged 40 and over. With champion-elect Mark Hughes yet to enter at the time of writing, ex-MG men Graham Ross (GR Motorsport) and Adam Jackson (AMW Motorsport) look set to be the main contenders for honours at Oulton Park.

All this weekend’s on-track action takes place on Saturday (3 October). The quickfire programme begins with Qualifying at 10:45hrs before Round 14 of the championship is scheduled to start at 13:55hrs. Round 15, the reversed-grid race, is then set to commence at 16:20hrs.

Nothing beats being trackside, with action also coming from TCR UK, for which Civic Cup is the official feeder series, and the brand-new 2026 Audi Cup.

But if you can’t make it in person, fear not; all the action is streamed live for free on The TCR UK YouTube channel.
